Pastor Timothy G. Smith
Pastor Smith came to Calvary Baptist in 1996 and has been Senior Pastor since 1999. He received a B.A. from Cedarville University in 1985 and a Master of Divinity from Grand Rapids Baptist Seminary in 1996. He worked in business for 7 years before God called him into the ministry. He was ordained in 1997.
Pastor uses “expository preaching” – preaching that focuses on the words, phrases, concepts and structure of the Bible. This is important for letting the authority of Scripture shape our thinking and not our thinking shape what we want to find in Scripture. He strives to show how God’s eternal truth is the standard for our lives and how God’s truth intersects with and how it should transform everyday life at home, work, church and community.
Pastor Smith is committed to a Biblical counseling. His conviction is that God and His truth are sufficient for all things and that we need truth in our minds in order to teach and encourage ourselves to face responsibilities and “opportunities” (often disguised as problems). Wrong thinking produces wrong attitudes, behavior and habits. These in turn cause a multitude of personal and family problems.
Pastor and his wife Lisa have 4 children—Timothy II (b. 1995), Arianna (b. 1997), Josiah (b. 1999), and Gabrielle (b. 2001). Lisa teaches at Bloomsburg Christian School and is involved in various helping ministries in the church.
Pastor Smith is committed to diligent reading of great Christian books, especially works of depth and sound theology. He especially enjoys the Puritans. He reads and studies the great classic theological works and biographies of the Christian heritage including Augustine, John Calvin, Martin Luther, Jonathan Edwards, and the great preachers and missionaries of church history including George Whitefield, George Muller, Charles Spurgeon, and Martin Lloyd-Jones. His favorite contemporary authors include R.C. Sproul, John MacArthur, and John Piper. He believes a wide range of reading can help offset the great cultural pressures of our time while also challenging and inspiring with a grand vision of what almighty God can do.
In addition to his calling to Christian ministry Pastor enjoys the outdoors—both working and playing. He enjoys sports and exercising and reading in a wide range of subjects.
